Talk: Pershore Abbey’s Pipe Organ

Talk: Pershore Abbey’s Pipe Organ

On the evening of 23rd September 2025, the Pershore Civic Society welcomed James MacDowall Scott, Musical Director of Pershore Abbey, for a fascinating talk and demonstration of the Abbey’s new Fratelli Ruffatti pipe organ. This is the first in the Society’s series of 2025/2026 Autumn/Winter/Spring talks. Held in the atmospheric setting of the Abbey, the event highlighted the instrument’s remarkable versatility, as James performed works ranging from the grandeur of Widor and Bach to the lyricism of Elgar and other celebrated composers. His playing vividly illustrated the organ’s tonal palette, from delicate, flute-like passages to powerful, full-voiced climaxes that filled the historic building. Between performances, which included a highly accomplished “pedal solo”, James engaged in conversation with the Civic Society’s chairman, Michael Hodges, answering questions about the organ’s construction, installation, and the opportunities it offers for worship and concert music. The evening was both educational and uplifting, giving members a deeper appreciation of this magnificent addition to Pershore’s cultural and musical life.

The next talk in the current series, entitled “Auction Notes” will be given by TV’s “Flog it” and “Antiques Road Trip” personality Philip Serrrell on 7th October.
