Philip Serrell’s Auction Notes – October 2025

Philip Serrell’s Auction Notes

An audience of over sixty members of the Pershore Civic Society gathered at St Andrew’s Centre on the evening of 7th October 2025 for what proved to be a most entertaining and memorable event. The guest speaker was Philip Serrell, the well-known Worcester-based auctioneer and television personality whose appearances on programmes such as Antiques Road Trip and Bargain Hunt have made him a familiar face to millions. With his trademark warmth, humour and down-to-earth charm, Philip captivated his listeners from the very start.

Drawing on more than four decades in the auction world, he shared a wealth of stories from his experiences in the saleroom, bringing to life the characters, curiosities and occasional chaos that colour the life of an auctioneer. His anecdotes ranged from the humorous to the poignant — tales of unexpected treasures found in attic clearances, spirited bidding battles, and the odd blunder that keeps even the most seasoned professional humble. Each story was delivered with impeccable timing and a twinkle of mischief that had the audience alternately laughing and gasping in disbelief.

Beyond the humour, Philip also conveyed a deep affection for his profession and for the people he has encountered along the way. He spoke passionately about the enduring appeal of antiques — not merely as objects of value, but as vessels of history that connect us to generations past. His reflections on the changing face of the antiques trade, from traditional auction houses to the online era, offered thoughtful insight into how the business has evolved while retaining its spirit of discovery.

The atmosphere in St Andrew’s Centre was one of shared delight. Philip’s easy rapport with the audience encouraged questions and laughter in equal measure, and by the close of the evening, there was a sense that everyone had been in the company of a master storyteller who genuinely enjoys engaging with people.

The Pershore Civic Society can take pride in having hosted such a distinguished and entertaining guest. As attendees lingered afterwards, the buzz of conversation and the smiles on faces were testament to an evening well spent — one that combined humour, history and humanity in equal measure. Philip Serrell left his audience not only amused but also newly appreciative of the fascinating world hidden behind the auctioneer’s hammer.
